AMETHYST
ORIGIN: Russia (Siberia), Sri-Lanka, Brasil, Uruguay, Canada, India and Madagascar.
AMETHYST is a silicon dioxide crystal with traces of iron. It is a type of quartz that belongs to Silicates family. It is commonly found in many sizes and shapes; Amethyst occurs in different shades of purple ranging from pale lilac to dark purple.
HISTORY: The Greek mythology attributes the purple colour of this stone to the tears of Dionysis, the god of wine and festivities. Its name comes from 'amethystos' meaning 'not intoxicate' because it was believed to have the ability to protect from addictions. This is also why reason why Roman matrons believed that wearing Amethyst would help to guarantee fidelity. Cleopatra is said to have worn a ring made of Amethyst engraved with the image of Maend, a Persian god, who was considered a source of enlightenment and love. Up until the 18th century, amethyst was included in the cardinal, or most valuable, gemstones (along with diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald). However, since the discovery of extensive deposits in locations such as Brazil, it has lost most of its value. However, the highest-grade amethyst (called "Deep Russian") is exceptionally rare and therefore, when one is found, its value is dependent on the demand of collectors.
