PEARL
ORIGIN: Persian Gulf, Myanmar (Burma), Australia, and Indonesia.
PEARL gemstone exists in various colours ranging from the most revered milky white, silver, cream, grey, lavender, golden, and blue to the darkest shades of black. Unlike traditional gemstones that are mined from the earth, is produced by a living organism. A pearl is formed when an irritant, such as a parasite or piece of shell, is accidentally lodged in an oyster's soft inner body. This is causing it to secrete a crystalline substance called nacre, which builds up around the irritant in layers until a pearl is formed. Cultured pearls are formed through the same process, the only difference being that the irritant is implanted in the oyster rather than entering it by chance.
Today, natural pearls are among the rarest of gems because of their almost entirely depleted supply. They were replaced by cultured pears.
