LARIMAR
LARIMAR appertains to the pectolite crystal gemstone family. is a sodium calcium silicate mineral formed in cavities within basaltic lava. Its blue colour and resemblance to the sea comes from cobalt or copper substituting for calcium.
HISTORY: It was first discovered in 1916 in Barahona in the Dominican Republic. The island inhabitants called it “blue stone” believing it came from the sea. It was given its modern name in 1974 by Miguel Mendez, who combined his daughters’ name Larissa and the Spanish for the “sea” (mar), into the word ‘larimar’. Mendez and its turps found a few stones on the beach, washed into the sea by the Bahoruco River. They followed the larimar trail upstream and discovered outcrops of the mineral forming the basis of the first mine. Larimar, a blue-to blue-green variety is found only in Caribbean.
